Murray Middle School students compete in Academic Games League of Amaerica

Two students from Murray Middle School competed in the Academic Games Leagues of America's (AGLOA) National Tournament in Atlanta, GA, April 19-22.

AGLOA is a non-profit organization dedicated to developing "Thinking Kids" of character, integrity, and excellence. AGLOA provides a series of Academic Games competitions nationwide where students who excel academically have a chance to compete and be rewarded for their accomplishments at the local, state and national levels. These tournaments challenge students to use higher-order thinking skills in mathematics, language arts and social studies.

Lew Barski, 6th grade, and Landon Kodare, 7th grade, represented the Martin County School District at the tournament. Lew participated in LinguiSHTIK and Social Studies (broken into Current Events and Theme categories), while Landon competed in Equations and On-sets.

On-sets is not played at the county or state level. Landon earned how to prepare for this game on his own, with the help of a tutor. According to AGLOA, the On-sets game is very valuable in teaching about spatial relationships. The mathematical content of the game is Set Theory. Players learn to create and describe sets of colored objects using Union, Intersection, Set Difference, Set Complement, the Universe and the Null Set.

Landon placed 1st in one Middle School Equations round and tied in another against very challenging opponents.

Lew placed as follows in the Elementary group (ALGOA's Elementary group ranges from 4th-6th grade):

  • Elementary LinguiSHTIK: 81 out of 127

  • Elementary Current Events: 27 out of 144

  • Elementary Theme: 20 out of 93

 Congratulations to both students!
